Winner of the 2017 Ovation Awards for Outstanding Professional Production and Outstanding Music Direction
“Circle Game is perfection” – Vancouver Presents
“It’s an ingenious idea—to combine Joni Mitchell’s stunning work with the enthusiasm, curiosity, and charisma of this young and talented cast.” – Ashlie Corcoran, Artistic Director
One of the most influential recording artists of the late 20th century, Joni Mitchell has often reflected on social and environmental ideals through her music. Circle Game reinterprets Mitchell’s iconic songs such as Big Yellow Taxi, River,” “California,” and “A Case of You” through the ears and eyes of a new generation, connecting to the politics and world we know today.

Die Walküre – Live Broadcast
Estimated Run Time 4hrs 55mins
In what is expected to be a Wagnerian event for the ages, soprano Christine Goerke plays Brünnhilde, Wotan’s willful warrior daughter, who loses her immortality in opera’s most famous act of filial defiance. Tenor Stuart Skelton and soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek play the incestuous twins Siegmund and Sieglinde. Greer Grimsley sings Wotan with Philippe Jordan conducting.
Die Walküre is Wagner’s second opera in his monumental Ring cycle. The Ring cycle is four of Wagner’s biggest operas, all linked together by the same story, which include Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung.
Die Walküre has long stood on its own as an evening of extraordinarily powerful theater. Part of this appeal lies in its focus on some of the Ring’s most interesting characters at decisive moments of their lives: Wotan, the leader of the gods; his wife, Fricka; his twin offspring, Siegmund and Sieglinde; and, above all, Wotan’s warrior daughter Brünnhilde. These characters and others follow their destinies to some of Wagner’s most remarkable music.
Die Walküre is set in mythological times, when gods, giants, dwarves, and humans all contended for power. It takes place entirely in human territory, as the balance of power in the cosmic struggle tips ever so slowly toward humanity.

Dialogues des Carmélites – Live Broadcast
Estimated Run Time 3hrs 9mins
Yannick Nézet-Séguin leads the classic John Dexter production of Poulenc’s devastating story of faith and martyrdom. Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard sings the touching role of Blanche and legendary soprano Karita Mattila returns to the Met as the Prioress.
One of the most successful operas of the 20th century, Dialogues des Carmélites is a rare, modern work that is equally esteemed by audiences and experts alike. The opera focuses on a young member of an order of Carmélite nuns, the aristocratic Blanche de la Force, who must overcome a pathological timidity in order to answer her life’s calling. The score reflects the genius of Francis Poulenc with a setting that takes place between 1789 and 1794 in Paris and in the town of Compiègne in northeastern France. Its historical basis is the martyrdom of a group of 16 Carmélite nuns and lay sisters from Compiègne, who chose to offer themselves as victims for the restoration of peace to France during the Revolution.
